Hebrews 4:12 | Pierced by the Word

The word of God is sharper than a double-edged swordFor the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews  4:12 NIV)

To most of us a sword is a long, edged piece of metal, used for cutting, thrusting, and as a weapon. For those of us who grew up watching cartoons, the image of Voltes V, carving a flaming letter ‘V’ in the body of an enemy ‘Beastfighter,’ would be how we would picture out the way someone would use a sword.

The Bible says that the Word of God is sharper than any double-edged sword, that   penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow.

Whenever I would think of this passage I am remided of a medical tool called the – scalpel.

A scalpel is a small but extremely sharp knife used for surgery, the reason why I am reminded of it, is that because for a doctor to create incisions in order to treat our inner parts he would need a tool for such precision cutting.

The Word of God functions very much like a scalpel that cuts incisions in our lives as it judges our thoughts and attitudes, in order to remind us of who we are: we are sinful people who are afflicted by the cancer of sin, we are terminally sick and in need of a Savior, we are people who have a void that needs to be filled with the truth that is in Christ.

In the same way that a surgery brings relief or better yet – healing! The piercing of the the double-edged sword – that is God’s Word – brings healing because  it frees us from the tumor of sin that causes us to live our lives apart from God. It heals us because it reveals to us the cure – the cure that is Jesus, who on the Cross was pierced for our sins and by the shedding of His blood brought us forgiveness and healing.

Have you been pierced by the Word?
